What chores did you have to do as a child? Did you get an allowance?

Saturdays were our chore day and Mernie and I had to clean the house every single Saturday before we could go outside to play. We had to vacuum and dust the entire house plus clean the bathrooms. We also had to do the dishes each night and we would take turns "washing" or "drying" the dishes. Mom had a set of copper bottomed pans and if she used them to cook, we had to use this special cleaner to make them shine again. We would take turns doing the dusting or doing the vacuuming. I much preferred to vacuum because I felt like I could do it faster. If you did the dusting, you had to pick up everything off of the tables and then dust. It seemed like it would take forever to pick it up, dust the tables and the put it all back. I felt like I could fly through the house with the vacuum and get it all done quickly. I remember that I knew exactly how far the vacuum would reach from one outlet to another. I knew when I was done with one room that I could plug in the vacuum into one place and then get two or three rooms done without having to move the plug. Major accomplishment. I hated cleaning bathrooms. We had to put Ajax in the toilets, polish the faucets and then scour out the tub. We had to take a wet cloth and wipe down the floors too. We used to get a set allowance for completing the chores on Saturdays but we didn't get paid for doing the dishes every evening. That was just part of being in the family. We all pitched in to help. I also helped Dad with cutting the yard. We didn't have a bagger lawn mower so Dad would cut the grass in a big circle and push all of the yard clippings toward the center of the yard. I had rake the yard and put the clippings in the garbage cans. We never had a bagger mower until Dad got sick and we got a very nice mower for Mom to use. It had a bagger!! I hated raking clippings but I loved doing all of the trimming and edging. We had an edger that we would use down the sidewalk and along the driveway. It just seemed that it made the whole yard look so good when it was all trimmed and edged. I still feel that way whenever I cut the grass. I love the little finishing touches that really make the yard look good and finished. I don't remember getting much money for our chores. I probably spent most of mine on baseball and football cards and didn't really save much in my bank...
